Temperature(2025-2026)

Vocabulary - Temperature, thermometer, celsius, kinetic energy, expansion

Yet another property - or way to describe Matter - is temperature.

So now, you can describe Matter by its state, mass, volume AAAANNND . . . its temperature.

Temperature measures how much the particles in the substance or object are moving.

Volume(2025-2026)

Vocabulary:  Volume, displacement, meniscus

Volume is another "property" of Matter - one more way to describe Matter.

Volume is how much space is taken up by Matter.

There was a question about Mass in your workbook about which trunk is the lightest that can help us understand this.

The trunk full of dolls has less mass than the other trunks because the dolls take up less space; the bodies and heads of the dolls are hollow.  There are lots of air spaces between the dolls and inside the dolls.

So the inside of the trunk is almost as much air particles as plastic / doll particles - like a bag of chips!  Hence the low Mass of the trunk of dolls.

Remember that there are 2 ways to find volume.  The method you use depends on the kind of object you have.  Watch the video to see.

. . . and when measuring the amount or volume of water you've put into a graduated cylinder, remember the meniscus!

Mass(2025-2026)

Vocabulary:  Mass, balance, gram, weight

Mass is a "property" of Matter.

Mass is a measure of how much matter - or particles - is in something.

And remember - Mass and Weight are NOT the same!  Ba - Ba Baaaaa!

Matter & States of Matter(2025-2026)

Vocabulary:  Property(ies), phase, definite/fixed, indefinite/not fixed.

We have changed gears with this post.

We move from the Natural World and the Science of Ecology . . .

to the Material World and the Science of "particles" - more on this in the future.

Volcanoes(2025-2026)

Vocabulary: Magma, lava, "Ring of Fire", shield, composite, cinder cone Volcanoes are one of the most awe-inducing, yet terrifying...
