Hello, Grade 7 Science students!
This blog will act as your online notebook and study guide.
I will post vocabulary, Powerpoints of notes taken in class and videos shown in class.
Please use this resource as you see fit: when you are absent, if you want to see/hear the videos to explain a concept again, or if you simply prefer it to your paper-and-pen notes. Whatever your situation, work to achieve your individual excellence in this course!
Volume is another "property" of Matter - one more way to describe Matter.
Volume is how much space is taken up by Matter.
There was a question about Mass in your workbook about which trunk is the lightest that can help us understand this.
The trunk full of dolls has less mass than the other trunks because the dolls take up less space; the bodies and heads of the dolls are hollow. There are lots of air spaces between the dolls and inside the dolls.
So the inside of the trunk is almost as much air particles as plastic / doll particles - like a bag of chips! Hence the low Mass of the trunk of dolls.
Remember that there are 2 ways to find volume. The method you use depends on the kind of object you have. Watch the video to see.
. . . and when measuring the amount or volume of water you've put into a graduated cylinder, remember the meniscus!
